Q: Can you recommend anything natural to help with my Type 2 diabetes? I have just been diagnosed and am altering my diet to try and avoid taking conventional medication.
A: Dear P,
Thanks for your e mail.
Type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly common. It occurs because glucose builds up in the blood instead of entering cells, which causes cells to be deprived of energy. Sugar, in the form of glucose, is the main source of fuel for body cells. The hormone insulin allows glucose in blood to enter cells. In type 2 diabetes, either the body doesn't produce enough insulin or cells are resistant to effects of insulin.
We have used our Filisa (Sutherlandia frutescens) to help to control blood sugar levels and have had some good success. The Sutherlandia plant naturally contains D Pinitol which appears to influence the action of insulin. D Pinitol is a natural sugar like molecule found in a variety of plant foods such as leafy vegetables but is not present in animal products and is not produced by the human body. It appears that D Pinitol may have an insulin like function and can help regulate the body’s metabolism and lower blood sugar levels. It also may make the cells of the body more sensitive to the effects of insulin causing them to more readily take up glucose from the bloodstream when insulin is secreted.
In a double-blind study of patients with type 2 diabetes, administration oy help regulate the body’s metabolism and lower blood sugar levels. 600 mg of pinitol twice a day for three months reduced blood glucose concentration by 19.3 and significantly improved insulin resistance. In a shorter-term double-blind study, administration of pinitol at a dose of 20 mg per kg of body weight per day for four weeks decreased the mean fasting plasma glucose concentration by 5.3.
You should take Filisa at a dose of 2 capsules daily with food. Take for at least 2 to 3 months before assessing the benefit by monitoring your blood sugar levels.
Chromium is an essential trace mineral that plays an important role in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and helps body cells properly respond to insulin. In fact, studies have found low levels of chromium in people with diabetes.
A couple of studies have found that cinnamon improves blood glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes. In the first study, 60 people with type 2 diabetes were divided into six groups. Three groups took 1, 3 or 6 g of cinnamon a day and the remaining three groups consumed 1, 3 or 6 g of placebo capsules. After 40 days, all three doses of cinnamon significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol.
You can buy chromium and cinnamon from Revital www.revital.co.uk I like either Lamberts or Higher Nature brands.
Hope this is helpful,
